Question: What Counts as Excessive Masturbation?
Answer: In some ways the answer is relative to normal masturbation. This varies between males, with teens and young men masturbating more frequently than older men. What counts as 'excessive' is difficult to answer. In one clinical situation a young man was known to masturbate around 10 times a day - seen by most doctors as excessive. Equally, just one masturbation in public would be viewed by most people as excessive and certainly illegal. Excessive masturbation over a long period of time may be considered a sign of a deeper psychological, sexual or physical problem.

Stress can increase as well as decrease sexual desire. Masturbation is linked to stress reduction and masturbating is often used as a de-stressor. Mutual masturbation is often part of many people's sexual repertoire. Mutual masturbation is also a great alternative to intercourse, with no risk of transmission of sexually transmitted diseases and no risk of pregnancy.
