World AIDS Day is 1st December. This day marks the 19th International AIDS day.

AIDS was identified in 1959, but is effects not fully recognized until the early 1980s. Since the emergence of HIV/AIDS, AIDS has claimed millions of lives and continues to cause untold suffering throughout the world. Here are some thought provoking statistics

  • The World Health Organization and the United Nations estimate that over 40 million people are living with AIDS/HIV world wide.

  • Over 4 million men, women and children will be newly infected with HIV in the year 2006. Over 500,000 of those will be children under the age of 15 years.

  • More than 25 million people have died of AIDS since 1981

  • More than 6,000 people become infected with HIV every day

  • 2.8 million people died from AIDS in 2005.

  • Africa has about 12 million AIDS orphans.
  • AIDS/HIV in the U.S.
It is estimated that over 4.2 million people are living with HIV/AIDS in the America.

  • An estimated 24-27 percent of people who have the HIV virus are undiagnosed and unaware of their HIV infection
  • In the United States recent evidence suggests a resurgence of HIV transmission among men who have sex with men (MSM) report the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Between 2001 and 2004 an estimated 44 percent of new HIV infections were in MSM, and 17 percent were in people who took drugs by injection.

  • Blacks and Hispanics account for 69 percent of all reported HIV/AIDS cases.

  • In the United States, 55 percent of people in need of antiretroviral therapy (ART) received it in 2005.
  • On World AIDS Day we remember all the people living with HIV/AIDS and all those who have died from this terrible disease. We remind Governments throughout the world that they should focus their efforts and increase action on HIV and AIDS. HIV/AIDS needs leadership, prevention, care and support, treatment, and the recognition and respect of human rights.
