Cataracts may result from a variety of causes but most often they occur with advanced age. The cataract is a whitening of the lens of the eye which causes deterioration of vision, but not blindness, in one or both eyes. Removal of the lens is the treatment for cataracts, after which glasses may be required in order to restore accurate focus.
