Then, in the 1970's as laws made getting amphetamines more difficult, their use all but disappeared. But now the use of amphetamines has returned in full force, primarily in the form of the supercharged version called methamphetamine. A report from New York City's Department of Health shows that the highest rate of new HIV infection is among gay men 35 to 49 years of age. Having lost countless freinds and entire social networks to HIV and AIDS, these men are now feeling the long term emotional affects of HIV. High levels of depression and anxiety make sustaining long-term monogamous relationships very difficult. Friendship and social networks play a big role in health maintanance. Having lived through so many dealths of friends and social contacts has impacted these men's ability to maintain their health long-term. Yet, while experts realize there are problems, few studies have been conducted to identify the long-term affects of HIV and AIDS.
