Inflammation to the conjunctiva of the eye is usually as a result of an infection or irritant. Infections are usually treated with eye drops, whereas irritants, such as an ingrowing eyelash, will need to be removed. Bandages or pads over the eye should not be used for long as they encourage bacteria. Dark glasses are better as these protect the eyes from further irritation. Conjunctivitis should not be ignored as this could lead to further complications such as ulceration of the cornea.
