Definition: Fear of flying (aviophobia) is a relatively common state of anxiety that affects both men and women. The fear may not simply be related to crashing or heights but can be embedded in a range of other issues such as concerns about leaving others. Heightened anxiety is exhibited through increased heart rate, quicker breathing, heightened sense of vigilance, sweating, irritability and a fear of totally losing control, causing a scene, sometimes being incontinent, or 'going mad'. Despite these dramatic symptoms the cure rate for fear of flying is extremely good and not terribly complex.
