Trade name: Zyban, also called bupropion hydrochloride, Wellbutrin or Wellbutrin SR .

Zyban is a relatively new non nicotine medication that is designed to help people quit smoking. Originally developed and marketed as an antidepressant, Zyban has been found to have a significant effect on people’s ability to quit smoking. A lot of people have found it helpful when used with a support program and many report that it reduces tobacco withdrawal symptoms.

How do I take it?

The medicaion comes in tablet form and usually taken twice a day. The drug needs to be taken for about a week to reach a theraputic level in the body. It is recommeded that Zyban is used for about 8-12 weeks, although the manufacturer says that it can be used long term.

How Does It Work?

It works by boosting the level of chemicals in the brain (dopamine and norepinephrine). The result is that it can make you have a feeling of well being, it can energise you. This can help eliminate or lessen withdrawal from nicotine and in studies it has been shown to be effective.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Yes there are, most commonly insomnia and a dry mouth.

Who shouldn't use Zyban?

  • People with a history of eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia.

  • People who have taken or are taking monoamine oxidize inhibitors (MAOI) medication for depression.

How Do I Get Zyban?

You need to go and see your family doctor. Zyban is a prescription drug only. He or she will be able to tell you if you should consider the medication. As we have seen Zyban is not recommended for some people and can produce side effects, so it important that you get checked out. Your doctor will be very pleased that you want to give up tobacco and can advise you on other options if it is not going to be good for you.

Can I take Zyban if I have chronic bronchitis, emphysema or COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)?

Yes apparently you can, but you must go see your doctor to make sure you have no other problems that would mean it made it dangerous for you to take it.
