Schizophrenic Men up to 50% Less Likely to Get Prostate Cancer

From Jerry Kennard, About.com GuideJanuary 4, 2007

Dr E Fuller Torrey, from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland, has found that schizophrenic males are between 24-51 percent less likely to develop prostate cancer. Although current evidence points to a relationship between schizophrenia and lower than normal rates of prostate cancer, a specific cause and effect relationship remains elusive. Dr Torrey suggests that lifestyle, genetic factors and cancer-protective effects from antipsychotic medication could be influential.
