From Jerry Kennard, About.com GuideDecember 30, 2006

Men aged 60 to 79 who lose 3 centimeters in height are 64 percent more likely to die or suffer heart disease than those who lose less than 1 centimeter in height. The findings, published in the Dec 11 Archives of Internal Medicine have speculated an underlying cause that affects bone loss, heart disease and other illnesses.

As men and women get older it is quite normal for them to experience a small decrease in height. This is due to changes in the joints, muscles and bone.
