Male Contraceptives-New Research

From Jerry Kennard, About.com GuideNovember 27, 2006

There are a number of trials taking place looking at alternatives to the present forms of male contraception. Most are based on hormones which will be in the form of oral medications, patches, injections or implants. There are other non hormone treatments also in development, a pill which prevents ejaculation of sperm, another that interferes with sperm development.

Tests on rats are helping scientists develop one such male contraceptive pill. A new molecule called Adjudin stops sperm maturing by blocking the connection between them and cells called Sertoli. Sertoli cells assist in the sperms development. When this process is interfered with the result is infertility. The study in rats was able to reverse the sterility when Adujdin was withdrawn. More research now needs to be done to see if their findings can be replicated in human males.

Also in development is a device called a Intra Vas Device or IVD. Designed as an alternative to surgical vasectomy, the IVD is inserted via a small hole made in the scrotum. The very small silicone plug blocks the sperms journey from their production site to ejaculate.
