New Hepatitis C Treatment

From Jerry Kennard, About.com GuideOctober 30, 2006

A team from the Saint Louis University (SLU) School of Medicine have discovered that ribavirin in combination with Ifergen (a type of interferon) is twice as effective in holding back liver damage in patients with hepatitis C and who are unresponsive to other therapies.

Around 4 million Americans have hepatitis C of which 50,000 a year are unresponsive to existing treatments. It is estimated that about 250 million people world-wide are infected with hepatitis C, approximately 2 per cent of the population of the US. Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that causes irritation and swelling in the cells. Hepatitis C can lead to cirrhosis (a liver disease) and liver cancer.
