Diseases and Conditions Affecting the Penis

The penis is part of the external male reproductive system. Made up of spongy tissue that contains many blood vessels the average penis size for the mature non-erect adult is between 3 to 4 inches long. Sometimes males are born with conditions that affect the penis, sometimes disease affects its function.

  • Priapism- A sustained painful erection

  • Phimosis-When the forskin cannot be retracted

  • Balanitis-Inflammation of the head and/or foreskin

  • Peyronie's Disease-Curvature of the penis

  • Hypospadias-Male birth defect where the urethra opens part way up the penis
