A clinical trial on a drug called Sulphasalazine is to begin next year to find out whether it may dramatically improve or cure damage to the liver caused by various liver diseases and alcohol. Although death rates for chronic liver disease and cirrhosis have decreased in the US by 5.4%, according to preliminary data for 2004 published by the National Center for Health Statistics in June this year, cirrhosis and chronic liver disease remains the 11th leading cause of death.
In a feature posted in the British Sunday Times Sulphsalazine, an approved drug for arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease has been shown to prevent scarring in the liver in animal laboratory tests. In cirrhosis the main damage is triggered by scarring (fibrosis) that occurs in certain liver diseases, the most common hepatitis C, and from alcohol abuse.
