Although the penis transplant was successful, the man and his wife failed to come to terms with his new penis. After two weeks the surgeons had to remove it.
Re-attachment of a penis has been successful before but the subjects were always reunited with their own penises following trauma rather than by having a penis donated to them. The psychological trauma of transplants are a significant issue. A New Zealander asked French surgeons to remove a donated hand as he found he was unable to mentally engage with it.
It is unlikely the transplanted penis would have had the ability to achieve an erection.
