Anabolic Steroid Abuse in Sport

From Jerry Kennard, About.com GuideJuly 31, 2006

Anabolic steroids are in the news. Justin Gatlin the World 100 meters champion and Floyd Landis, winner of the Tour de France, have both failed dope tests by testing positive for testosterone. Testosterone and a related compound called epitestosterone should have a ratio of 1:1 in urine. Both Landis and Gatlin must have had a test result of at least 4:1 to meet the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) criteria for a positive result.

Landis claims he has naturally high testosterone levels and must now prove this with further tests. It has been established that the testosterone Justin Gatlin tested positive for was artificially administered.

Anabolic steroids are not just a problem of athletes. More and more teens are taking them to increase body musculature and to so-called sculpt their bodies. They all seem unaware, or willing, to take significant health risks. Anabolic steroids, thought of as enhancing masculinity, can have side effects of increased erectile dysfunction and impotence, even though sexual desire is increased.
